When were not at the game, were watching on TV, and broadcasters shape the way we see baseball. This year, Sporting News has been reviewing the work done in booths acro s MLB, a proce s that continues with archived games on MLB.tv. This time its the Miami Marlins on Fox Sports Florida the 130th game of the season, as selected by a random number generator.Rich Waltz begins the game in a unique way, by throwing down to on-field reporter Allison Williams.Lineup change for Mike Brett Martin Jersey Redmond, Waltz says, after reading the lineup. A-Dub, what did Redmond say about this spot? The change is that Marcell Ozuna is batting cleanup and Casey McGehee is batting fifth. Breaking away from first pitch to go down to a reporter displays more urgency than is needed for this incredibly minor switch. Nobody is actually in or out of the lineup. Williams provides some stats on how Ozuna has been playing well lately, and recaps what Redmond said before the game. Is this really worth jolting attention away from the first two pitches of the game?Maybe, because when it goes back up to the booth, Waltz introduces Angels starter Wade LeBlanc with the most affected faux-French accent you can imagine. Tommy Hutton talks about all the former Marlins who are with the Angels Triple-A team in Salt Lake City, which, OK, maybe people are wondering what Randy Wolf is up to.Thankfully, Waltz drops the exaggerated pronunciation quickly. After LeBlanc i sues a two-out walk to Giancarlo Stanton, its time for Ozuna to bat in the cleanup spot. Waltz mentions that Ozuna has a seven-game hitting streak, then talks about how with the promotion to the cleanup spot, the key for Ozuna is, dont try to do too much. Hutton agrees, saying, I think the biggest thing in making a move such as this, especially with a young hitter, is just to say, Keep swinging the bat the way you have been. While this is Ozunas first game in the cleanup spot in 2014, he had 41 starts as the Marlins No. 4 hitter in 2013. He might be young, but there are two important things to remember. First, where a person hits in the batting order should never have any impact on the way they approach an at-bat, with the occasional exception of a No. 8 hitter in a National League park. Situations can dictate approach, but where your name is on a lineup card should not. Second, even if you buy into the idea that lineup positions matter, Ozuna hit fifth for the Marlins in two of their previous three games. In the old-school lineup archetype, the No. 5 hitter is supposed to be an RBI guy, while the No. 4 hitter is the power man. Is there really that much difference?Ozuna strikes out. Blank Jersey Maybe there is something to all this. Or maybe its just a strikeout, because Ozuna does that fairly regularly wherever he hits in the order.Psycho analysisThere are two sides to every lineup change, so when McGehee leads off the top of the second inning, his part of the story has to be discu sed as well.Psychologically, Tommy Hutton, going from fourth to fifth for McGehee, whos had his struggles a bit, whats that like as a hitter? Waltz asks. The answer to this had better be, Its not a big deal at all, McGehee made his major league debut in 2008 and hes hit in all sorts of different spots in the batting order. Bonus points if Hutton knows that fifth is where McGehee has hit more than any other spot in the order in his career, including 13 games in April before he settled into a regular spot batting fourth.I dont think its gonna weigh on his mind too much, Hutton says. Great!Waltz interrupts for the call Logan Forsythe Jersey of the play: Liner to right, Calhoun in, and he makes the catch.Hutton continues: I think the other thing with Casey McGehee, hes been around enough that he knows. Hes also, over the last three days, that series in Denver, started to swing the bat a little bit better. So, thats all hes concerned about: how hes swinging the bat. If he can help protect Ozuna, or whoevers in the lineup, and drive in some runs, its gonna be fine. Hes not going to worry about it.Now we have a conflict between Waltzs a sertion of McGehees struggles and Huttons claim that he started turning things around in the last series. McGehee snapped an 0-for-19 skid in Denver, and went 5-for-15 over the rest of that series. If Waltz was trying to say that McGehees struggles had led to his being dropped in the order, then it has to be asked what Redmond is doing, because it seemed that McGehee got himself back on track without any prompting from a lineup switch.Numbers gamesThe next report from Williams gets another A-Dub lead-in from Waltz, which might be meant to be endearing, but Yohander Mendez Jersey continues to make everything he says sound like, I AM A SPORTS BROADCASTER! I HAVE LITTLE THINGS THAT I SAY IN CERTAIN SITUATIONS! PLEASE HIRE ME TO BE A SUBSTITUTE HOST ON SPORTSCENTER IN 1999!Williams talks about how Jarred Cosart, after coming to the Marlins in a trade with the Astros, is pitching against an American League West opponent for the second time in four starts.Thats not nece sarily a good thing for Cosart, Williams says. In fact, he has the fourth-highest ERA against that division this year, at 6.34 However, maybe he can reverse that trend, lower that ERA against the AL West now that hes in the NL East, because he pitched well against the Rangers last week went six innings, gave up six hits, just one run in the no-decisionMarlins win.Waltz continues on this line of thought about things that are nearly completely random. Two starts ago, (Cosart) beat this guys old team, St. Louis, with seven innings of shutout ball, Waltz says. David Freese. With Erick Aybar on deck. You see those numbers, David Freese always a threat against the Marlins. You know, its funny, when you start putting numbers together we talk about Cosart, against those teams in the West, then you look at the Angels, and you wonder how will these numbers work? The Angels have averaged six runs a game, in their games against the National League East this year. Please stop talking about this now. Its all based on very small samples, and even if those samples fit in with larger trends, just talk about the larger trends, because this is nonsensical. But I think thats so sporadic, especially in interleague play, Waltz says. Its hard to really pinpoint those numbers.Thank goodne s.Of course, the Marlins have had succe s against the West, Hutton chimes in. Wild swings on either side. Remember that great sweep Jason Grilli Jersey over Seattle, and the agonizing sweep at the hands of Oakland. The Marlins swept Settle early in the year, in April, then had the showdown with Oakland, in which every game came down to the last inning, and every game came down to one little play, and Oakland came out of Miami with three wins. The Marlins have
